Eco-Friendly Ferris Wheels

Australian Ride Could Be Turned Into Giant Green Windmill

Designers from all over the world are trying to figure out what to do with Melbourne's iconic Southern Star Observation Wheel. The $100 million wheel was decommissioned, but instead of just letting it get demolished, designers are thinking of new ways to use the giant ride. One idea is to turn it into a giant green windmill.

Buro North, photographer Peter Bennetts and Fooch from Squint Opera, have put their heads together to transform this Ferris Wheel into a green windmill powered by solar-sail energy. The futuristic Ferris Wheel would be complete with landscaped hubs and steam-powered trams.

The green windmill proposal is just one idea out of many. Who knows what else could be created from this fallen carnival ride. The good news is we are all definitely in for a engineering treat.
