This Frozen Summer Treat Repurposes Ingredients from the Trash

A new flavor from Portland-based ice cream shop Salt & Straw will be launching in June, and it is a frozen summer treat that is worthy of note for more than its flavor.

Although many people will be intrigued to try Salt & Straw's 'Second-Steeped Rum Spices and Apple Butter' for taste alone, this is a new product with a purpose and story behind it. This new ice cream flavor will be made by re-steeping rum-soaked spices sourced from Portland’s East Side Distillery, and bruised apples that would otherwise end up in the dumpster purely because they have some unattractive spots on them.

As food waste is an issue that's top-of-mind for many consumers, Salt & Straw will be working with local organizations throughout the summer to help reduce food waste and make sure it can be reallocated to those in need.
