This Project Gives Former Inmates a Second Chance

Elaine Brown opened an urban farm that gives former inmates a second chance. For those who spend time in prison, readjusting to life on the outside can be an extremely difficult task. This socially conscious farm helps supply former inmates with the education, skills and resources they need to get back on their feet.

Unlike traditional farms, Brown's vegetable garden is located right in the heart of Oakland, California. The tiny urban farm is less than an acre in size yet it contains 40 hosting beds. The farm produces a wide variety of crops, including corn, tomatoes and kale. What is most unique about Brown's urban garden is that it is entirely run by former inmates. The garden provides these ex-offenders with a steady source of income as well as the skills and training they need to pursue future career goals.

The socially conscious farm ultimately gives former prisoners a second chance.
