Fold-Out Furnishings

Make the Most of Small Spaces with Christy Oates' Minimizable Movables

From the conceptual stream that brought you the space-saving utility of the Murphy bed, designer Christy Oates' fold-out furnishings can have a huge impact on a tiny room. Oates' Twofold collection of simple laser-cut wood-veneer pieces includes a desk, chair and stool, all of which can be folded into the wall while not in use -- and, as their name suggests, require "two folds" to flatten.

The storage unit, which has the appearance of a tasteful contemporary art piece, allows the fold-out furnishings to remain out of sight, out of mind while not in use, and never far from arm's reach when additional seating is required. Oates says her fold-out furnishings are designed to take advantage of small spaces while conveying the concept that "less is more," and were inspired by origami forms.
