Optical Illusion Shelves

This Shelf Gives the Impression of Floating Books on the Wall

The 3X-Design team of Takanori Ikegaya, Kazuki Sakurai and Kosuke Ota created a shelving unit to give the illusion of floating books. The unit is called 'Tape Shelf.' Each book is fastened to the wall using a corner attachment that resembles a piece of tape running across each of the floating book's corner.

The idea for the project was to create an illusion that people would relate to and understand without having to think too much. Using the universal language of design, the 3X-Design team did not want verbal language to be needed in the explanation of their shelving unit.

'Tape Shelf' was featured at the 2015 Milan Design Week. Their optical illusion of floating books was extremely popular. It's a simple and interesting way to display and to store books as well as being a space-saver for homes and offices.
