A UK School Board Will Implement a New Tool in Its Cafeterias

Nine schools in Scotland's North Ayrshire's school district have planned to incorporate facial recognition in their cafeterias.

To speed up payment and minimize touch amongst students and staff (especially during the pandemic), facial recognition is being explored as a means to do so. During busy lunch hours, facial recognition can help speed up wait time by quickly identifying a student and directly processing a lunch charge to their account.

Schools in North Ayrshire's school district will soon implement CRB Cunningham's facial recognition system, which is currently undergoing hardware checks to ensure its system is safe and encrypted. The software will check against encrypted face templates and will not use live facial recognition. So far, 97 percent of parents of children attending North Ayrshire's schools have offered consent to this new tool. If successful, the device could be adopted by other UK school boards.
