Landscape-Embracing Architecture

The ESO Headquarters Extension Builds on a Distinct Design

The ESO Headquarters Extension by Auer Weber builds on a pre-existing structure in Germany, which reflects the topography of the surrounding landscape.

The building itself houses an organization that performs research for astronomy, so the design of the headquarters needed to reflect this blending with the cosmos. As such the architecture takes on a wave-like form, exuding a calming effect for those that walk by or enter. Much of the facade is made from windows, allowing for the daylight to pass through and make it easier for individuals to still enjoy the weather outside.

The new extension works well with the pre-existing part of the building, and does not appear out of place or haphazardly added on. Auer Weber seamlessly integrated the two for a polished final effect. Photo Credits: designboom, auer-weber.de
