LGBT-Celebrating Park Campaigns

This Campaign Seeks to Honor the Equality Movement in America

A group of New York City residents recently began a campaign to honor the equality movement in the United States with a new National Park. In 1969, the Stonewall Inn was the site of a historic uprising against homophobia. While the area around the Stonewall Inn is widely regarded as a historic site, this new campaign seeks to make it official.

New York City's 'Christopher Park' is currently on the National Register of Historic Places. However, New York City residents are on a mission to make the area a National Park through a series of educational campaigns. While there are a number of National Parks that honor significant events in American history, these activists point out that there are none that address the LGBT struggle for civil rights in America.

The new campaign seeks to expand the diversity of the story presented by the National Park Service by honoring the equality movement in a unique way.
