People have this done for many many reasons that range from ritual to fetish. I guess the reason why I would consider it is that they can be hidden under your hair.
The process is also relatively straightforward and simply requires the top of the ear to be cut and reshaped into a point as it heals. I hope they follow all the elfin safety rules!
