Mazda Steps Onto the Electric Car Scene With the All-Electric Mazda2

Japanese automaker Mazda has recently announced its intentions to enter the electric auto market in the spring of 2012. The electric Mazda2 will be the companies first foray into the electric auto scene and will be available only in limited amounts and only to Japanese drivers.

Details on the electric Mazda2 are scarce at best, but what we do know is that the car will weigh only 10 percent more than the current Mazda2s and will have a range of 124 miles. The car will be shown to the world on August 1st when it transports dignitaries and other important people to the reopening of the Miyajima Aquarium. After that the car will hit the streets of Hiroshima to see how it fairs under real world driving conditions.

Mazda will begin offering the electric Mazda2 on a limited lease basis in 2012, with the primary customers expected to be large companies and government agencies looking for new cars. No word on pricing or availability which tells me that Mazda isn’t willing to go all-in on the electric car market just yet.
