Andrew Ross is a young UK designer whose Bone Project produced a range of objects out of cow bones, including jewelry.
He got his material directly from an abattoir. Cow bones are now just discarded after the cattle are slaughtered for their meat. Previously, cow bone meal was used as cattle feed, a practice now outlawed after the BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalophathy) or mad cow disease crisis. So his Bone Project benefit both the environment and the economy as the farmers will not only be farming food but products.
Ross is a graduate of Dundee University and recently won the New Designers Swarovski Crystal Palace Award for his "innovative exploration of unexpected matter and a thorough investigation of applications."
