Quagga Designs Reinvented the Platform Bed

Quagga Designs reinvented the platform bed with its innovative design approach.

Carl Heinrichs, a self-taught furniture designer and daughter Janine Heinrichs, a graphic designer set out to design sustainable platform beds. "We saw a market segment that was totally ignored," says Carl. Not only are their wood bed frames sustainable and easy to assemble, but they are also unique: customers can expand it from one size to the next. "This is great for people who want to upgrade their mattress but don’t want to bother going out and buying an entirely new bed frame," says Janine.

Their primary customer base has always been in Canada, but through the pandemic, they have realized the importance of broadening their horizons and scaling. Lumber supply has been scarce during the pandemic, especially for smaller companies like Quagga. To do this, they realized the need to expand into the lucrative US market.

Quagga Designs is a Niagara-based bed frame company that was founded in 2003 by Carl Heinrichs. In earlier years, Carl focused on custom furniture which has evolved into selling five unique bed frames online. This came from customers who would come to him and ask for easy to assemble bed frames that don’t squeak. Today, he offers 5 all-wood, easy to assemble options: the No-Fuss Plus, the Tic-Tac-Toe, the Flex, the Accordion, and the Rustic bed.

Their mission has always been to design the easiest to assemble beds by eliminating metal parts. They are also constantly striving to be as sustainable as possible by using natural products such as linseed oil. All of their beds are made of native Birch plywood harvested in Quebec. Being environmentally conscious towards Mother Nature is not an option anymore; rather, it’s a necessity.

The company also has a strong charitable focus, working together with non-profit organizations throughout Canada. One of their largest supporters is Matthew House in Fort Erie who supports families who are struggling financially, as well as refugees living in shelters. To date, they have donated well over 500 beds to people in need.

Janine, a graphic designer, joined her dad as part-owner of the company during the pandemic. She has been instrumental in broadening the company’s reach online.
