Discovery Air, a Canadian specialty aircraft manufacturer, has proposed an innovative solution to the harsh conditions that prevent food and supplies from reaching the upper recesses of the Arctic Circle.
Although it may seem uninviting to the average urbanite, the tundra provides a number of benefits to its inhabitants: solitude, natural beauty and fresh air. In the hopes of comforting the brave souls who willingly live "up there," Discovery Air has released plans to ferry supplies to remote parts of Canada via blimp. Originally used in long-term reconnaissance by the U.S. military, these dirigibles will begin servicing mining settlements and small communities in the northwest territories by 2014.
Capable of carrying up to 50 tons of materiel, landing ostensibly anywhere and withstanding the harsh winter winds, these blimps are nothing to be trifled with. If you live anywhere near Yellowknife, please be patient -- your canned soup is on its way!
