A set of cylindrical buildings tower in the city of Hilversum. Designed by Dutch architecture studio Mecanoo, the structures are meant to reference the integrity and appearance of "dismantled gasholders." The project occupies the former site of the Regional Energy Supply Company and the cylindrical buildings are erected to create a community-friendly space that offers "a mixture of affordable housing alongside owner-occupier properties, small business units and sports facilities."
In the development of the neighborhood, Mecanoo uses distinct industrial-style materials to instill a definite identity that openly references the historic value of the gasworks. In doing so, the practice is able to guide the neighborhood's vibe by way of a strong stylistic presence that binds both the separate cylindrical buildings and components of the complex together, as well as the people that live in it.
