Artistically Cut Self-Portraits

Kamolpan Chotvichai Expresses Buddha Teaching on Illusion of Self

The artistic quality behind these cut self-portraits immediately show that there is a much bigger purpose behind the shredding than pure aesthetics. Although sculpturally shredded, each image plays with the idea of identity in a rather dark way. Of course, this is due in large part to the black and white shots.

A project of Kamolpan Chotvichai, an artist based in Bangkok, Thailand, the cut self-portraits are an exploration into the the Buddha teaching of anatta, which means 'not-self' or the 'illusion of self.' By slicing away her identity with such intricate ease, her cut self-portraits visualizes this concept in a gorgeously abstract way. She writes, "The idea of this self-existing is actually self-formed and leads to variety of emotions." Her cut self-portraits help explore these emotions.
