The Crabster CR200 is Designed to Crawl Along the Ocean Floor

The Crabster CR200 is a gigantic robotic crab developed at the Korean Institute of Ocean Science and Technology. The robot, which weighs 1,400 pounds, is being designed for use on the ocean floor for a range of scientific and commercial purposes.

About as big as a car, the Crabster is designed to explore shipwrecks and other areas of interest on the ocean floor. Its four rear legs have four degrees of freedom, while the front pair have six.

The Crabster CR200 still has some ways to go before it can be considered complete, as it currently lacks an outer shell. The Korean Institute of Ocean Science and Technology hopes that it can begin depth testing of the Crabster in spring 2014. This would involve lowering the Crabster to a depth of 656 feet, and assessing its locomotion and control systems.
