Pfizer's 'Paxlovid' is the First Oral Antiviral Treatment For COVID-19

American pharmaceuticals and biotechnology giant Pfizer has managed to receive authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for COVID-19 pills under the Paxlovid brand name.

These COVID-19 pills consist of two different drugs, namely nirmatrelvir, a molecule that aims to curb the replication of the virus that causes COVID-19, and ritonavir, which helps to reduce the metabolization of nirmatrelvir and thereby aid its antiviral capabilities. As far as the regimen is concerned, patients are to take two nirmatrelvir tablets and one ritonavir tablet every 12 hours for a period of five days.

Under FDA guidelines, these pills may be used to treat adults as well as children aged 12 and over, and are recommended for high-risk individuals within five days of their developing symptoms.

Marking the very first oral treatment option for COVID-19, the Paxlovid medication could prove to be a crucial stride forward in the fight against the pandemic.
