Algorithmically Designed Jewelry

Nervous System's Corollaria Collection is Inspired by Biology

Nervous System, a Massachusetts-based design studio, combines new technology with biology that's eons old to create its Corollaria collection. The series of jewelry is inspired by microscopic cell structures, but the studio achieved its design through the use of an advanced algorithm.

The lattice structures that make up the Corolloria jewelry are composed of brass and rubber. The shape of these lattices were created on a computer through the use of an incredibly complex algorithm. According to Nervous System, "an anisotropic centroidal Voronoi algorithm" created the intricately patterned spaces within the pieces. This system allows for multi-scale patterns, or patterns that manifest when viewed on both a macro scale and a micro scale. The Locule necklace, one of the pieces in the Corolloria collection, is a good example of this concept.
