The Commuter X4 Bike Lights Help Drivers Judge Cyclist Distance

The Commuter X4 is a wearable bike light that is designed not just to help drivers spot cyclists, but also to help them judge cyclist’s distance, width and speed. The fiber optic device was designed by London-based Ed Ward after he was knocked off his bike and into a busy London intersection.

The Commuter X4 can be worn on the back or around a backpack. Made of durable, water-resistant materials, the device comprises a central LED light and four fiber optic light-guiding straps which illuminate the lights across the cyclist’s back or backpack. The straps can be adjusted to fit backpacks of up to 35 liters capacity.

The straps make it easier for divers to judge wearers’ distance, width and speed in a manner that isn’t possible with traditional single rear lights. The straps also allow drivers to notice cyclist’s side-on profiles at intersections.
