The new Children's Surgical Hospital in Uganda recently opened its doors to young patients and their families. The design focused on harmonizing the requirements of a surgical hospital with a successful piece of architecture.
The hospital is built on a piece of land that slopes down to a nearby lake. The designers consciously worked to create a sense of unity between the structure and the natural environment. The structure was built using a traditional rammed earth technique - mixing earth, sand, gravel, binding agents, and water to create wall structures. This technique is eco-conscious and respects the nation's building traditions. The roof of the structure is made of photovoltaic panels, ensuring that the hospital has an autonomous supply of electricity.
