Ann Hamilton Creates Playful Art and a Childhood Ride for Adults

This childhood pastime takes participants on more than just a ride through space! Visual artist Ann Hamilton invites her audiences to ride in a field of swings that inspires more than just fond memories of our youth.

In the large-scale media installation entitled the event of a thread, 42 swings sway through Park Avenue Armory’s 55,000-square-foot space. A multi-sensory installation, participants ride the swings while listening to readings, sound and each other move. What’s cooler is that although participants are swinging individually, they are also working as a unit to move a massive, billowing white curtain dividing the space and one another, inspiring the relationship about life and human connectivity.

Alongside the metaphorical swings and swing-controlled curtain, 42 homing pigeons rest in their cages beside the two people reading texts into microphones. This aspect further encourages participants to dig deeper to interpret new meanings from the interactive installation.
