A Group of Design Students in Sweden Created the Chia-Chair

A group of three design students created the Chia-Chair, which is a unique piece of furniture that places plant life as the main design focus. It is the brainchild of Alice Hultqvist, Emelie Sjöberg, and Linnea Nilsson at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

The main component of the chair is that the 'upholstery' doubles as a planting bed for chia seeds. Instead of the usual cushioning, the seat and backrest are made from a knitted tubular structure to allow the plant to grow. The designers explain that it is meant for humans to respectfully approach the chair, treating it like it is a living thing. The inspiration behind the Chia-Chair stems from the designers' concept of the negative impacts on the environment caused by humans.
