Through out time there has been at least one constant, and that is the the purpose of a chair is always for sitting, no matter what new crazy chair concept is rolled out. There are often new chair concepts being designed but sometimes nothing can beat the classics.
Every chair designed takes inspiration from its basic form, the stool. Every chair starts off at this point until it gets atleast a back. That is when designers get to play with new chair concepts. Before any chair becomes a staple for its time period it started off as a futuristic idea.
The ball chair designed in 1963 must have been seen as an eye sore. If the ball chair concept was introduced before it was it might not have survived. It has the vibrant colors and youthful modernism of the 1960s was able to secure the ball chairs place as an iconic image of the time.
Any idea that comes about that wants to stand the test of time must not be afraid to push the envelope. It also helps when you have an ideal present in the time that you are designing.
