Laughing Lady Campaigns

This Campaign By Turkish Women Mocks Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc

Thousands of Turkish women have taken to social media posting selfies of them laughing, in response to a bemusing comment made by Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc in which he declared that women should not laugh in public.

The comment was made during a speech made to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, in which Arinc extolled the virtues of chastity and traditional values. He said that women "will not laugh in public" and "will not be inviting in her attitudes and will protect her chasteness".

Turkish women retaliated by taking to Twitter and using the hashtags #kahkaha (meaning 'laughter') and #direnkahkaha ('resist laughter') to mock Bulent Arinc's comments. Women of all ages used the hashtags to share photos of themselves and others laughing. Women in other parts of the world have since joined in on the fun to show their support for their Turkish sisters.
