Permanent Shadow Artistry

Brigitte Zieger Spraypaints an Airplane's Silhouette onto a Grassy Field

Part prank and part artistry, ‘The Shadow’ by Brigitte Zieger tricks viewers into thinking that an airplane is flying directly above them and casting a massive silhouette onto a grassy field. It isn’t long until the illusion is compromised however, as audiences will no doubt notice that the airplane’s shadow remains perfectly stationary despite supposedly flying at high speeds through the air. Zieger achieves this effect by spray painting the grassy field itself with shadowy hues. The precision and patience required to execute such a task speaks volumes of Zieger as an artist and person.

Brigitte Zieger made ‘The Shadow’ for Les Environmentales a Biennial of Contemporary Art held at Tecomah, which is an environmental studies school located in close proximity to Paris.
