Volvo is pushing towards a future of self-driving cars by testing out the autonomous garbage truck. With the help of Swedish waste collection company 'Renova,' the pair is working to explore "how automation can contribute to enhanced traffic safety, improved working conditions, and lower environmental impact."
While many of the developments being made elsewhere focus on autonomous highway driving with humans controlling the vehicle within cities and towns, this venture focuses largely on automation within an urban environment. Volvo says that an autonomous garbage truck is the perfect way to test this technology within the city. Like a human operated waste-collection vehicle, the autonomous garbage truck follows the same route and schedule each week.
Volvo has also committed to the development of autonomous cars in a $300 million joint venture with Uber. With a strong reputation for safety, it is no surprise Volvo is working so hard to make autonomous cars a new reality.
