Self-driving cars are being further realized each day, which makes the announcement of the Automated Valet Parking from Daimler and Bosch a welcome yet expected capability. The functionality has been demonstrated at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany where visitors will be able to simply stop their car, exit and activate the self-parking functionality via their smartphone. This will enable guests to focus more on enjoying their time at the museum versus spending time parking their vehicle.
Speaking on the new innovation, Head of Automated Driving and Active Safety at Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, Dr. Michael Hafner, said, "We are approaching autonomous driving faster than many people suspect. The driverless parking solution at the Mercedes-Benz Museum demonstrates in impressive fashion just how far the technology has come. Parking will be an automated process in the future. By applying an intelligent multi-storey car park infrastructure and networking it with vehicles, we have managed to realise driverless parking substantially earlier than planned." The Automated Valet Parking service is set to launch in 2018.
