Auer Weber Designed a Curvaceous Addition to This Research Facility

German architecture office Auer Weber completed an extension for the Europea Organization for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO).

The architects added hollowed, interconnected cylinders and fluid corridors supported by stilts to the Munich facility, originally designed by Fehling + Gogel. The former design featured interlacing curves, which sheltered the courtyard. The library, lecture halls and conference rooms were connected by stairs and bridges.

The extension continues the rounded aesthetic that the first architects began. The new concrete columns contain an auditorium, offices and meeting rooms, all of which surround and view the courtyards. The team at Auer Weber continue, "The curved shape of the extension building with its fully glazed facade provides the illusion of a structure floating above ground on its inclined clad supports."
