Infant MRI Machines

The New Machine from Aspect Imaging can Save Newborns' Lives

Aspect Imaging, a medical imaging company, and Frog, a design consultancy, have built a new MRI machine specifically for hospitals' neonatal intensive care units. For those who have received an MRI before, it is clear that the standard machine's noise alone could be damaging to a newborn baby. MRIs are still hugely important to solving medical issues in infants, though, so Aspect Imaging and Frog undertook the challenge.

The key to the infant-focused MRI machine is its size. While traditional machines need to be large enough to fit the entire body of a person of any size, newborns are, of course, much smaller. The lack of a size constraint allowed the design team to create a smaller, more portable, and less expensive machine that is safe for newborns.
