Creative Placemaking Headquarters

The Arquipelago Contemporary Arts Center is a Gathering Place

Located on São Miguel, a volcanic island in Portugal's Azores archipelago, the Arquipelago Contemporary Arts Center is a stunning project that has revived an oold complex formerly used as an alcohol and tobacco factory.

The Arquipelago Contemporary Arts Center is already making waves in the world of architecture, having been shortlisted for the Mies van der Rohe award and nominated for the European Union's 2015 architecture prize.

The Arquipelago Contemporary Arts Center will house living quarters for resident artists, studios, laboratories, rooms for performing arts and exhibition galleries. The arts center also incorporated a rainwater harvesting system and was a project involving architects Francisco Vieira de Campos, Cristina Guedes and João Mendes Ribeiro, who say they aimed to contrast the differing architecture on the complex in order to reflect its history.
