New York-based photographer Haley Jane Samuelson recently unveiled her latest series titled, 'Another Room.' The photographs evoke a distinctly haunting feeling. Each of the scenes impress upon the viewer that something is missing -- or rather lost -- despite the clarity and definition of Samuelson's photography. How Samuelson does this is difficult to articulate with words, owing to the supremely visual nature of Another Room.
The use of natural light and darkness is central aspect of these photographs. In much of the Another Room a soft white light pours through open windows cutting a streak of contrast between itself and the darkness.
People are the most prominent objects in the series; they are often portrayed pursuing some motion that has been cut short by the camera's shutter. In this way Another Room achieves a sort of limbo effect. The lives of the people in the photographs and even the constant interplay of light and dark are put on hold. This, perhaps, is how that haunting effect is born: Another Room arrests moments before they can be realized. What would have been lingers in one's mind.
