Monk Folklore Renderings

Alex Ferreiro Interprets a Cautionary Tale in Three Pictures

While illustrators everywhere are producing pop culture-related images to gain notoriety amongst Internet users, Alex Ferreiro is going against the grain by illustrating pictures with obscure references.

In this three-picture series, entitled ‘Monk and Tea,’ Ferreiro retells a Tibetan folktale about a monk seeking out a great teacher in order to further his studies. He tries to impress the teacher by demonstrating his vast knowledge, but to his surprise, the teacher begins to overflow a teacup with a fresh brew. The teacher explains that he used the cup as a metaphor, trying to show that you cannot impart more knowledge onto someone who believes him or herself to be exceptionally knowledgeable. The monk then takes on a humbled perspective, and thus his learning begins.

Alex Ferreiro depicts the story with rather surreal and extremely stylized images, demonstrating his propensity for outside-the-box thinking, as well as his incredible technical skills.
