Urban Instagram Photo Journeys

Ailine Liefeld Documents New York City in this Series

While many serious photographers would guffaw at the notion of Instagram art, Ailine Liefeld embraces it.

The Berlin, Germany-based photographer recently took to the streets of New York City, snapping Instagram shots wherever she went. All photography is more or less instant; however, only Instagram allows for almost immediate editing. The on-the-fly nature of this particular strain of photography was well suited to Leifeld's purposes.

Launched in October 2010, Instagram is a free photo sharing application that lets people take photographs, apply filters and share these photographs across various social networks. The photographs are limited to a square shape, thereby giving Instagram pictures a distinct look.

Liefeld wandered the nooks and crannies of the sprawling metropolis, taking square pictures of buildings, people, street-scenes, and, yes, food, that could be immediately uploaded to the cloud.
