Facebook's '2G Tuesdays' Teaches About the Developing World's Internet

In an effort to understand and empathize with much of the world that operates on a slowed down version of Internet, Facebook is launching '2G Tuesdays' for its employees.

Every Tuesday morning, employees can choose to experience the site for an hour as a slowed down version -- functioning on the second version of wireless Internet technology instead of the speeds from the third or fourth they're used to. The project aims not just to have people understand the Internet access difficulties many people have around the world, but also to find ways to simplify the social media site.

By running the slow motion version on 2G Tuesdays, technicians, developers and designers will see ways to further cut down on data-heavy aspects of the site, like they already have done with 'Facebook Lite.' This way, the company is learning how to deliver its service with more ease, speed and efficiency globally.
