Japanese gourmands are willing to pay top dollar for good food including almost $1000 ($910) for just a bunch of grapes. This 700 gram (1.5 lb) bunch was recently sold at auction in Japan's Ishikawa prefecture. With about 35 grapes in the bunch, that worked out to be approximately $26 per grape!
The Ruby Roman grape variety first developed Japan in 1994 usually fetches prices in the $250 range. This bunch was special, "They're delicious -- sweet but fresh at the same time, very well balanced." The grapes were bought by a hotel manager so only the diners at their upscale restaurant will be able to tell whether they were worth it.
