Yaara Derkel Presents 'Coppelius' to Challenge the Mind

Yaara Derkel has put together the 'Coppelius' chair, which is both an object for practical use as well as an art project aimed at challenging the mind.

For Derkel, she was drawn to the idea of how an object can take on more than one quality. It's partly lifeless and simply a still piece of furniture, but it can also take on a life of its own leading to an uncanny effect. When the light is shining the right way on her Coppelius chair, it casts an eerie shadow that looks like a monster with slitted eyes opening its teeth. This really speaks to the uncanny effect that furniture can have, questioning how lifeless these items really area in day to day existence. Photo Credits: designboom
