Peering into the lives of fourth-grade students around the world, photographer Judy Gelles took a series of introspective shots in her Word Portraits series. Gelles photographed the backs of children while they striked a pose. Incorporated into each photograph are the answers to questions that Gelles posed to her subjects. As a result, we can see the personality of each child coming through in both the positioning and the text.
Word Portraits explores the lives of children from the United States, India and China. Gelles travelled to each of these countries and asked three simple questions. She asked who they live with, what they wish for and what they worry about. The resulting answers reveal the culture that each child has grown up in and the conditions that they deal with.
