Solar Food Storage Containers

The Wakati Stores Fruit and Vegetables Without Refrigeration

The Wakati is a solar-powered device that can be used to increase the amount of time that fruit and vegetables can be stored by giving them a safely sterilized microclimate. The device is designed to help farmers in developing countries who may not have access to refrigerators and electricity in general, causing them to lose produce and profits to spoilage.

The device can store up to 150 kg of produce and is fitted with a solar-powered ventilator, which evaporates 200 ml of water a week to create a humid environment. This helps reduce the extent to which crops dry out after harvesting.

100 Wakatis have been supplied to Haiti, Uganda and Afghanistan, with full-scale production set to commence shortly.
