Artist Courtney Brown created a beautiful underwater sculpture that combines live on the surface with the sea for the SLAM Museum of Art event in California. The installation commemorates the Underwood 1938 typewriter's vintage aesthetic covering it with beautifully carved and warped octopus tentacles woven throughout the sculpture's design.
Brown's piece showcases how artists can work with pre-existing items to create a work that is an extension of the original piece. The sculpture begins with the typewriter as a base, highlighting the antiquated elements of the keys and gears as the focal point. Then handcrafted tentacles mimicking the shape, size and aesthetic of octopus limbs are seen coming out of the writing device. The limbs are made from bronze and creatively coil into the machine.
