'Two Stumps + An Axe' Repurposes So-Called Waste Wood

I don't know if I've ever seen a piece of art with a name as accurate as 'Two Stumps + An Axe.' The aptly named piece is exactly what the name suggests: two wooden stumps making up a chair and footrest with a wooden axe making up the backrest.

Two Stumps + An Axe was designed by Hongtao Zhou using wood scraps from the Vermont Studio Center's sculpture shop. The sculpture was created to show all of the things that could be created using "scrap wood." Zhou estimates that 30 million trees are cut down everyday, which means that there is an unimaginable amount of wood going to waste because it cannot be used in a conventional sense. Here's hoping that Zhou's Two Stumps + An Axe opens some eyes up to world of wood upcycling.
