Facebook is working towards developing a thought typing system. Researchers from the University of Califonia, who are supported by Facebook's Reality labs have shown a system that is able to turn speech into text format, where the system only relies on brain activity.
The thought typing system is called a brain-computer interface, or BCI, program. It works by detecting electrical information on the surface of a person's head. Sensors were placed over sections of the brain linked to speech. Participants in the program were then asked to answer questions and the BCI system was able to interpret a response form only brain activity. While the system still has certain limitations, the current progress is promising.
