For those who are unaware, in July of 2012, Nigeria suffered from a series of floods that killed 363 people and displaced over 2,100,000 people; the Things We Lost in the Flood photo series captures the survivors of this terrible event. Although its sad title focuses on the difficulties these locals have faced since the flooding, the expressions captured are more than resolute, they are strong and even hopeful.
Shot by August Udoh, a photographer based in Lagos, Nigeria, the Things We Lost in the Flood photo series underscores its dark tone by its evening setting. Makeshift homes, rickety canoes and muddy grounds make up the backdrop of each photo. Somehow his subjects make the best of such dire conditions.
