As part of her graduation project from the Design Products course at London's Royal College of Art, Finnish designer Kirsi Enkovaara created a flexible seating structure titled, 'The Body.' The versatile project can be bended and coiled into countless arrangements, all of which are intended to encourage us to reassess how we sit.
The structure is constructed out of a ribbed material that extends six meters in length. The malleable material will retain its shape, so that the user can rest upon it any which way they please. Enkovaara explains, "From early on we learn what is the right way for sitting in our own culture and have seats that encourage these ways of sitting, but often we can find ourselves sitting in very odd positions in standardized seats."
Enkovaara's alternative to "standardized" seating allows us to dictate the way we sit, emboldening us to listen to our bodies and gain new awareness on what we find comfortable.
