Architectural Nutrition Labels

'Sustainability Facts' for Homebuyers

San Francisco-based architect Michelle Kaufmann is calling for ‘sustainability facts’ to benefit homebuyers, statistics that are essentially nutritional labels for houses as they pertain to energy efficiency.

Kaufmann released a white paper advocating the usage of sustainability facts after completing an energy consumption study that compared one of her energy-efficient prefab homes, the Sunset Breezehouse, to a traditional home made from the best-selling design in the nation.

As you might imagine, the green Sunset Breezehouse slaughtered the traditional home in terms of efficiency. Kaufmann believes that translating this comparative data into the sustainability facts format is an approachable format for homebuyers to see the benefits of an energy-efficient home--and do so just as easily as they’d compare two bottles of salad dressing at the supermarket.
