This Pair of Yubari Melons are Some of the Most Expensive Fruits

These status fruits just sold for $15,730 at auction in Japan. A pair of status fruits called the ‘Yubari Melon’ are among some of the most expensive in the world; paying that much for a pair of Japanese cantaloupes is slightly questionable, but to each his own. These two melons weighed in at 3.7 killos and cost the equivalent of a new small car.

The status fruits named the cantaloupe ‘Yubari’ melons are viewed by the Japanese as a status symbol similar to how some people view rare wines and whiskies in a similar light. These melons are apparently used as ornaments and it is not known whether these people are actually eating the pricy fruits.

When purchased these melons will be presented in an ornate box, with the T-shaped stalk along with the fruits. If you are looking to purchase some $15,000 melons head over to the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market in Japan.
