This Art Installation Consists of Smoke Signals Fired at a Laser

'Binairy Talk' is an interesting art installation, put together painstakingly by artists and engineers at the Koln International School of Design in Germany, that consists of ring-shaped smoke signals being fired at a green laser sensor.

The installation aims to give viewers an understanding of ethereal radio waves, a family of light and wave signals that are constantly around us but that we tend to take for granted.

Binairy Talk essentially uses a sound generator and a pulsing device to aim and fire smoke rings at the laser sensor. These rings are then interpreted by a computer in binary fashion, i.e. as being either ones or zeros, with resulting messages displayed on a screen.

The ultimate aim was to use an ancient system of communication -- smoke signals -- to "create awareness as to how much data and information constantly surrounds us."
