Trend Hunter first covered burnt furniture in February. Now we are seeing even more burnt furniture designs, especially from designer Maarten Baas.
In backlash against the blandness of globalization, designers are striving to create emotionally expressive objects that are rich in meaning. By artfully burning existing furniture using the smoke technique, designers are taking traditional furniture and adding anew touch of style.
Technically, Smoke is very simple: Baas takes existing wooden objects, scorches them with a blowtorch and seals the charred surfaces with epoxy. Then, he resells them through galleries (the Mint gallery in London lists one of his carver chairs at £2,300).
The “Smoke†is not a recent concept, Bass started 2 to 3 years ago.
