Ocean-Cleaning Island Cities

Estudio Focaccia Prieto Conceptualizes Self-Sustaining Island Cities

Estudio Focaccia Prieto proposes the creation of self-sustaining island cities in the middle of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The project, called Polimeropolis, might not sound like offering the most appealing lifestyle but its noble cause is worthwhile. The self-sustaining island cities will draw on ocean debris to power themselves and "create a renewable system within" while simultaneously having a positive impact on the environment. The Polimeropolis project is ambitious, no doubt, but a great example of how architects and designers are approaching the future of living during climate change acceleration. Much like the energy that powers these cities, Estudio Focaccia Prieto envisions the infrastructure to be made up of recycled plastic residue from the ocean. With the current floor plan, each self-sustaining island will be able to house about 4,000 residents.
