A Columbia Engineering team has developed the world's first self-powered video camera, a device that is theoretically capable of recording indefinitely using power extracted from light from the images it captures. This camera incorporates energy-harvesting photodiodes within the pixels of its image capture array, allowing it to produce electrical power to power itself while simultaneously capturing video footage.

What's exciting is that the process used to forge together this prototype camera could eventually be used to produce power for other devices such as tablets and phones when the camera isn't being used to capture images.
