The Raytheon SeaRAM is a new self-defense missile designed to take out targets that might threaten shallow-combat ships.
The SeaRAM is based on the Phalanx Close-In Weapon System which uses a highly advanced radar to identify incoming missiles, before targeting and destroying them using 20 mm machine guns that fire rounds of tungsten. However the SeaRAM also uses a radar to support the missile system, in this case the Rolling Airframe Missile. This supersonic, lightweight missile is designed to attack close-range threats including cruise missiles and helicopters.
Tested successfully, the Raytheon SeaRAM is all set to be deployed on U.S. Navy ships. This missile will help defend navy personnel against anti-ship cruise missiles, and will give warriors an advantage over their foes.
